Purpose: To offer worshipers an opportunity to
practice the discipline of forgiveness - by learning to bless those
they have grudges against.
Materials Needed:
- Fine washable markers.
- Medium-sized smooth aquarium stones (or other polished rocks).
- A Basin to hold water.
- A poster of Matthew 5:43-48 printed for easy reading.
Set Up:
- Present the poster so it is easily readable by participants.
- Set up the basin (decorated or covered to blend in as much as possible).
- Fill the basin with water.
- Arrange the stones around the "well," along with the markers.
Practice
- Have particpants come and spend time mediating on the Matthew 5
passage. As they meditate, have them ponder who some of the
people they consider "enemies" are.
- When a name (or "names") pop into their head, have participants
pick up a stone and use one of the markers to print the person's
initials on the stone.
- While holding the stone in their hand, have participants say a "prayer of blessing" for the person initialled on the stone.
- After the prayer, encourage particpants to drop the stone in the
well, and allow God to wash away the grudge we hold as the water cleans
the rock (note: it's very important to mak sure the markers are washable!).
- If the participant is able to set in motion the blessing for the person they prayed for, encourage them to do so.
