Purpose: To allow communion participants an opportunity to obey the commands for self-examination found in 1 Corinthians 11 - as well as giving an opportunity for a positive movement by echoing Jesus' statement in Gethsemane, "Not my will but yours be done."

Materials Needed:

  • A Large Cross
  • A Table
  • A basket (for the shredded confessions)
  • Scripture Print-outs:
    • 1 Corinthians 11:26
    • 1 Corinthians 11: 28 - 29
  • Question Print-outs:
    1. Do you have any un-confessed sins?
    2. Do you believe that Jesus’ body and blood have brought forgiveness for your sins?
  • Images:
    • Crucifixion Scenes
    • Communion Elements
  • Blank Scratch Paper
  • Pencils
  • Cards printed with, "Not my will but yours be done"
  • Tape

Set-Up:

  •  Set up the table and place the cross next to the right end (participants will flow from left to right).  Set the basket at the foot of the cross.
  • Place the station instructions at the left end of the table and make sure there is enough light for people to read them comfortably.
  • Place the Scripture Print-outs and the two Questions at the center-point of the table.  Again, be sure there is enough light for people to read.
  • Set the images of Jesus' crucifixion and Communion elements around the Scriptures and the Questions.
  • Immediately next to the questions, set up the scratch paper and pencils.
  • At the right end of the table, set up the pre-printed cards.

Instructions:

  1. Read the two Scripture passages which are presented on the table.
  2. Read the two questions and spend some time meditating on your answers.
  3. Write down any un-confessed sin on the provided slips of paper.
  4. Fold the paper up and carry it to the cross.
  5. While standing before the cross pray a prayer of repentance, asking God to forgive your sin and empower you to live a life more conformed to God’s will.
  6. After saying the prayer, tear up the slip of paper which has your confessed sin written on it.  Throw the shreds into the basket next to the cross.
  7. Pick up on of the cards labeled, "Not my will but yours be done" and attach it to the cross.
  8. Proceed to the Communion station.
