Purpose
To allow our senses of sight, touch, and vision to participate in prayer.
Materials Needed
- "Votive" candles, lots of them!
- A "mega bic"(s), or matches to light the candles.
- Paper and pens/pencils for writing down prayers.
- A plate, or other container, to place the prayers into.
Set Up
- Place the candles into holders (you may also get a "riser" for them, but this is not necessary, at least in smaller gatherings).
- Arrange the candles around the offering plate.
- Place paper and pens/pencils at various places on the table.
- Place
the the lighter(s) and/or matches on the table (if you use matches,
make sure you have a small container of water present at the station,
so the matches can be disposed of safely).
Instructions
The
mechanics of this station are relatively simple. What is not often
understood is the reason for lighting a candle as part of a prayer.
Make sure to describe the Biblical symbol of a candle or lamp in the
Bible (The presence of the Spirit, a symbol of prayer reaching to the
heavens the way the flame reaches upward, etc.). Such instruction is
important if people are going to feel "free" as them come to prayer at
this station.
- Write a prayer request or praise on a piece of paper.
- Say a prayer of supplication, or thanksgiving, to God and then place the paper in the offering plate.
- Light a candle (or candles) as part of your prayer.
