Before I start my reflections on this week I'd like to ask people a favor. I notice a good number of people are downloading the devotional guide off the site and this makes me very happy. Would you do me a favor and contact me somehow (IM, Comment Here, E-Mail) and let me know how you're using the materials? I'm really interested!
OK, week 3 deals with "Ethical Uniqueness." It was an interesting theme to deal with for me. I got the feeling that people "got" this passage - even though many had never read the Book of Leviticus (I smell a sermon series coming up). There is just something appealing about the unique idea that Israel was supposedto be loving the alien and stranger that both affirms the beauty of the Christian faith and challenges it's current forms as found in this country.
Here's some thoughts.... It was cool to see so many people continuing to do the "work outs." The work out they needed to bring to week three was a comparison of where people heard about "the mighty acts of God" mentioned during the worship gathering (note: not just the sermon). The answers were really neat - here's some... The opening Psalm spoke of the might of God. The Scriptures mentioned the Red Sea. The offering shows how God gives us everything we have (this floored me in such a good way). Prayers were answered. Specific People were mentioned as being examples of God's mighty acts The songs/hymns mentions God's salvation. This one floored me: I looked but there really wasn't much (not at our Church, btw)
The video is a lot shorter. A bit shorter than I wanted to to be, but much better than than the last one. Also, Steve Taylor's "I Want To Be A Clone" makes a cameo so that's cool. - A couple of people asked me after the group times and the sermon how Leviticus 19:34 should impact the current struggles between Israel and Palestine - it's a really good question that I hope I encouraged people to think about without making them see "good guys" and "bad guys" (the whole thing is a mess and Lev 19:34 is part of the solution).
Anyway, it's been good - week 4 will be even more interesting as this wednesday I'm heading to a college campus to work on the week 4 work out asking, "What do you think when you hear someone say, 'This is a Christian nation?'" I'm expecting some interesting answers...
