OK, I'm a Dweeb... PDF Print E-mail

ImageOK, I've got a confession to make that might shock some of you.  I apologize for any grief this causes you....

I really like the TV show "Grey's Anatomy."

There, I said it.  Are you happy?

Seriously, it's a good show, here's some things I like...

  • Characters - this show has some really interesting characters.  The kwirky characters and fast-paced dialogue make the show enjoyable to watch.  While there are quite a few cliche situations (who's sleeping with the boss?), the characters themselves aren't.  They live and breath and have grown over the year the show's been on - and I find that refreshing.  My favorite character is George, who is the main comic-foil in the show (you gave me syphilis!) - but he's not just a clown, he's got a good back-bone and stands his ground with dramatic (rather than comic) effect.  I'd love to catch an interview with T.R. Knight (he plays George) to see how similiar/different he is from his character.
  • Story-Treads - The main plot device has been a love triangle between the show's main character (Meredith Grey) and "Doctors Shepherd."  Wait, it's not what you think!  When the show began the Shepherds were split-up after Dr. Mrs. Shepherd had an affair and so Dr. Mr. Shepherd moved to Seattle to get a fresh start (and met Meredith out there, everyone got that).  He thought she was through with him and he called her "satan" - but Dr. Mrs. Shepherd showed up at the end of season one to seek reconciliation (yes it's a soap - I did say I was a dweeb).  Here's the thing, it would would be typical to either send the wife packing so the cute couple can stay on course or keep the wife around as a spiteful adversary for the show.  They actually did neither.  Dr. Mr. Shepherd is in love with Meredith, and he's admitted that to his wife, but he deliberately chose to be reconciled to his wife and work through his conflicting relationship.  It makes for some good scenes - but I'm impressed that the writers would take this much more difficult track for the story line.
  • Dialog - Yes, I mentioned this in the characters point but I want to highlight it.  The writing in this show just seems to flow.  The fact that the writers have some good characters to work with helps - but the writing just seems so wonderfully "tweaked-normal" that it sucks me into it.  It's rapid-fire at points, but not so much that it gets tiring - there's a good range to it.
Anyway, yes, I'm a dweeb - but this is a show that's worth catching at least once.
