Please don't alarmed, the title of this passage is not a ranting string of cracked pearls springing from the mouth of a disgruntled pastor. I'll do that tomorrow (just kidding). Rather, I want to ask, "What's the point" with regard to the "why?" of evangelism. As in, "Why are we evangelizing?" Attached to this question is one that I think is almost as important, "What outcome do we want to happen through our evangelizing?" Yes, here I am asking, "Well, duh?" questions again. I can't help it, it's in my nature. I'm not sure I actually can quit asking them, it appears to be a calling of sorts. So why am I asking these obvious questions this time? Well, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps we've not chewed on them enough given our accepted language regarding the subject. One of the reasons I like working on different projects with my friend qohelet (AKA "Jim" from the CrossPointings.org podcast) is that he makes sure that I'm not skating through my life and faith (there really isn't a difference anyway - but there you have it). This post is a case in point. We're both going to the Emergent Philosophical Gathering at Eastern University next month and so have been reading some works by John D. Caputo in preparation for that event. The reading has been fun, but Jim is insisting that I blog my thoughts on it before the gathering so I'll be even better prepared to interact during the conversation. Normally, I wouldn't hesitate to take someone up on such an idea - but during Lent I've been shutting down my laptop for somewhere between 6 and 8 hours a day (which, ironically, gives a lot of time to read but not much to write). I've finally given in to the temptation to get some thoughts out in the ether. Here's my thoughts on Chapter One of On Religion. This Lent I'm reading Spreading The Gospel In Colonial Virginia . Its an interesting book, and it's been nice reading some primary sources from that period in history. One thing that struck me in the opening essay, however, was the impact that the Great Awakening had on religion in Colonial Virginia. Now, I've been familiar with the Great Awakening for some time, but just about everything I've read on it has been focused solely on its impact on New England. I knew that the Awakening had an impact on the rest of the colonies, but I've never really had an opportunity to read anything that gave me a broader perspective. This was my first chance to read the writings of both "New Lights" and "Old Lights" outside of New England. Interesting Developments... |

The last few weeks have seen some interesting developments in my experience as a pastor. People have started visiting our worship and coming back the next week. One of these guests is a woman has brought her 3 daughters for three weeks straight, and this past week each of her daughters brought a friend. Another couple has recently moved into the area and seems to be settling in at Central. A young man who has been coming for several months took me aside after worship two weeks ago and said, "I want more." This is something that every pastor (whether we admit it or not) dreams will happen - so that young man and I are getting started on a long process of deliberate discipleship. I'm looking forward to that. Comments (2) | Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 603 |
