Robert Webber - Rest in Peace PDF Print E-mail

ImageMost folks who know me understand how deep my desire is to be part of the Church.  My Christian education, from Lancaster Mennonite to Eastern College, were constant reminders that a Christianity without an awareness of it's history was a dead-end.

After I graduated seminary and started pastoring, the desire to take up some of the ancient practices of the Church grew in my heart.  As I glanced around the spritual landscape of Evangelicalism™ I saw how we were either (a) reinventing the wheel, (b) committing some of the same errors the Church had wrestled with centuries earlier, or (c) becomming convinced of what I call "the next big thing-ism."  The Church needed some gifted pastors and academics to help start charting a course that would attach our ancient roots to our need of a present future.

God gave Evangelical Protestantism Rober Webber.

Good Samaritan, in Lego... PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wes

A friend of mine e-mail me this link (thanks Jesuitspy).  It's the story of the Good Samaritan, done in Lego.  I love Legos, and I love the Bible, and I think Jesus' parables rock.  So here's a convergence of my favorite things in such as way that it's probably a sign of the end times.  Enjoy!

Earth Day PDF Print E-mail

ImageSometimes things just seem to fall into place.  The week after Easter my wife and I had a couple of days home without the kids, which gave her a chance to take a walk with a friend of ours who has been part of our congregation for a year (and a friend for longer) - but lately has been identifying with Jesus more and more.  While on their walk my wife and our friend strolled down by the Deleware river and passed a small park and a "beach" where kids like to skip stones.  It was a bit of a pig-sty, worse than usual (we have to be careful skipping stones because of all the broken glass on the rocks), and our friend said, "You know our church ought to come down here and clean this up."

I'm not sure who put 2 and 2 together, but the fact that Earth Day was coming up quickly set up a day to get people together and do the clean-up, Sunday April 22.  We didn't get a chance to push the date with the congregation, but my wife and our friend figured it would be great even if we were the only people to show up.  It turns out that two other gentlemen from Central Baptist showed up (and actually beat us there) - appropriately, they both work for the EPA!

Caffinated Wezlo PDF Print E-mail

ImageEaster Sunday I was a little bit more hyper than I am on a typical Sunday morning.  I'm not sure why, but I was really excited to celebrate the resurrection this year (mostly it's because I did more deliberate preparations than I do normally - but that's another topic).  Now, for some reason (mostly because I joke about it) people seem to think that when I get bouncy during (or before) worship I've had too much caffiene.

That's not really the case.  Actually, the more hyper I am before and during worship the more my nervous energy is working it's way out.  My sub-concious mind goes into over-drive as I wonder about sermon points, prayer requests, how to greet people, if the slides are goign to be OK, who is doing what, and when the Choir is going to show up (or "if they are going to show up," there's a running joke that the Choir is going to sneak out for breakfast one week - I think I'd have to shake their hands if they ever did it).  Anyway, I'm like a blithering-idiot before worship (and often during).

Emergent Conversation - Day 2 PDF Print E-mail

The Conversation Space
Well, day two has come and gone.  I'm enjoying this conversation very much.  Caputo and Kearney are two extraordinarily accessible people and their interactions are a joy to witness.

During the morning session in day 2 I finally found out how to make room for the Incarnation in Caputo's philosophy of religion.  In true PoMo form Caputo opens up this path by relying on someone else to open up that possibility (namely, Kearney).  Caputo begins from the stance of the "impossible," and Kearney begins from the "possible" - when they meet in the middle the avenue of "the possibility of the impossible" opens up.

The Incarnation (yes, Caputo would shudder at my use of caps - but I'm part of the Christian faith community and the Incarnation is the event of our faith) is certainly the impossible becoming possible - God in the flesh is an insanity that  Christians have wrestled with for centuries.  As such, I do appreciate how Caputo eventually put this in the morning session.  Of course, he immediately deconstructed it by pointing out that the messianic hope is something which is always in the future.  I should have known it wouldn't have been that neat!
